About the Book

With the book 10,000 Words, Mt. Airy writer David R. Evanson takes the “flash fiction” genre to its absolute limits with 100 short stories, each one no more than 100 words. As the table of contents shows, 10,000 Words achieves volume, yes, but also breadth. The book contains stories about history, war, love, addiction, loss, and even espionage.

The stories in 10,000 Words range from funny to darkly funny to just plain dark. But the author believes it is the darkness that lurks in all of us, said or unsaid.

About the Author

The desire to write ultra-short stories was borne out of David’s professional experience. “When I was a columnist in the 90s, my monthly remit was 1,500 words. By 2010, that was cut in half. And today, I’m asked by some of the most respected business outlets in the world to deliver articles of 500 words, or less.

10,000 Words follows this trajectory. “Honestly, with 10,000 Words, I was trying to stake out territory in the bathroom. I wanted my readers to be inspired or spooked or entertained in the time it takes to answer nature’s call.”
